Question from longtime friend RW: Hey JD, I’m settling in with the Nikon D5100 and have been using the 18-55mm kit lens to get a feel for using the camera, and I think I am ready to upgrade and buy 1-2 more lenses and wanted to get your opinion. First I am looking at a decent portrait lens for snapping shots of the little one when she arrives and am either going with a 35mm or 50mm. I am kind of

It’s tough to come up with good titles anymore after having a website/blog for 10+ years. Actually, I’m not sure I was ever very good at picking blog titles ;-). I almost entitled this blog entry “Mashed Potatoes and White Gravy” due to me having mashed potatoes and white gravy three days in a row. However, I decided to title it “Kayak week and staying busy” and leave the permalink (URL) with the mashed potatoes bit… 2016 update, title changed
Things have been busy around here! Projects left and right, with a trip (thanks Jesse ;-)) coming up to top things off. But it’s a good busy and good projects too. These are worthwhile things that pay dividends in the long run. Despite the busyness, we are making sure to take time out for the little things that mean a lot to us. This is a very special time for us as we consider the future and treasure the present.
Some people enjoy building hot rods, or building model airplanes. I enjoy building computers. The first PC I built was in 1997, I was a sophomore in HS. I can still remember researching all the parts, using a computer in the HS science classroom (I didn’t have internet at home at that time). Tom’s Hardware and Anandtech were my primary sources of motherboard and CPU reviews. Those two sites helped me immensely in choosing the best components for my “first
As I ponder the year, and how fast it sped by, here is a short sampling (there are a lot of things left out) of what stood out during the year… You can checkout Samantha’s year end recap as well as Jessica’s. If you have your own year end recap, please post a link in the comments! These are organized by category, not by chronology… Warning, there are a LOT of photos!
John Odom, or jodom as I affectionately refer to him, had his loft featured on the blik blog: Caption: Jodom’s pimpin’ pad Speaking of Jodom’s place, Samantha will be visiting John in STL after Shannon’s bachelorette party this weekend. She’s picking up a hard drive for me and hopefully she, John and Angela will get to chat a bit and maybe grab a tasty bite to eat :-).
Samantha and I arrived in Tulsa this afternoon. Then we spent some time recooperating from the past few days excitement: Easter, Samantha’s birthday(s), plus good times with great friends and family. Tonight we headed over to the Fettkether’s place for dinner. The evening was replete with delicious food, birthday cake, homemade root beer and great company. Kaldun was on top of his game tonight. He showed me his new pet Mooshu, played the violin for us, enjoyed a present that
A long time ago I wrote a blog entry entitled “Friends as Food” in which I anthropomorphised various foods to match my friends, or was it vice versa? Regardless, after watching the Cell Phone Reuninon video it made me think about friends and phones. (Thankfully my friends that have iPhones are nothing like the iPhone character in the video!) Sometime I would like to do a real Friends as Phones entry where I figure out what phones best match
