Mini-itx AM1 gaming system w/discrete video card and DC PSU!
Mike sent me some info and photos of his awesome mini-itx system:
I crammed the AM1H-ITX along with a 5350, a Kingston HyperX 4gb DDR3-1600 stick, Slimline DVD-Rom, Microcenter house brand120gb SSD, a couple 40mm fans, and an EVGA GTX 750 2GB (non-ti) into a Travla C158 case. I’m powering it with a DC power brick (part number 316688-001 or spare 317188-001) from either a beefy HP laptop or possibly a docking station. The specs are 18.5v, 6.5a, 120 watts. I crossed my fingers, pushed the power button, and it powered up. Tested on Far Cry 3, nothing blew up. The brick gets warm, but not unbearably so.

Guys, i live in Brazil, and some days here reach so easy 40º celsius. I want to know if is viable with these temperature, a setup like yours. Since i saw you doing extra coolings for the mosfets and others parts ^^

Thank you for your comment. If you have a case with good ventilation, then I think you would be fine with a setup like this!
Otherwise, ff the computer case is closed without many vents or of it is in a cramped space, then heat could eventually be a problem.

I have a question
Does using DC power in place of the usual thing decrease total power consumption ??
By decrease i mean , generally psu’s have efficiency issues , thereby adding some extra watts to the actual power needed by the components
I hope you understand what i am trying to say.
Sorry for the late reply, MysteryBoy. Yes, in theory a good DC setup can reduce wasted power compared with a mediocre AC PSU, because efficiency losses are real on both sides. The exact savings depend on the quality of the brick and the DC conversion, so I would not assume it is always dramatically lower.

I was looking for a way to email you, but I’ll comment here and hope you see it (now that I think about it, it may help others answer their question too).
I’m not too well versed in electronics, ratings, and things-that-don’t-make-things-blow-up. This is a very interesting post, and I was wondering:
Does just about any AC adapter work with this setup as long as its 19V and matching amperage? Mike mentioned that he’d put a beefy HP laptop adapter in. This made me think, hmm, maybe I can just find an AC adapter that puts out 200W and be able to call it a day.

Sorry for the late reply, Henryk. I would not use just any adapter even if the voltage looks right. You want the correct voltage, enough wattage, the right polarity, and the right connector, and more available amperage is fine but less is not.

Is your PCIe riser able to power a 750 Ti which has no external power connector ?

Sorry for the late reply, A. I have not tested that exact riser and 750 Ti combination myself, so I cannot promise it. My best guess is that it can work if the riser is properly powered and the card stays within slot power limits, but I would still be cautious.

I would like to build a small HTPC with a Nvidia GT 1030 OC, a passive graphics card that is said to work at 30W TDP.
Do you think I could use a laptop brick to power up such a build ?

That is a great question! Yes, with a nice ~90W+ laptop brick (PSU) you should have no problem powering a 30W GPU + a AM1 motherboard and CPU 🙂
