DeWalt lithum ion battery, replacement under warranty
I have a fairly new (1 year old) DeWalt lithum ion battery that now refuses to charge. Therefore, I contacted DeWalt for battery replacement under warranty. DeWalt was very helpful and here is the support transcript:

Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:32:10 AM): Can I get the model number on the bottom of the battery please.
Me (3/11/2019, 11:33:16 AM): DCB205
Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:33:27 AM): On the unit there is a date of manufacture stamped in the top can I get that please. This will start with 201, I need all the numbers as written please.
Me (3/11/2019, 11:33:43 AM): 2018 [XX-XX XX]
Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:33:57 AM): What is your zip code please.

Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:34:09 AM): One moment
Me (3/11/2019, 11:34:18 AM): No problem. Take your time!
Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:34:51 AM): Normally this would go to the service center for warranty replacement and that would be mail in, as a one time courtesy I will replace the unit but any further issues will have to be mailed in. What is your shipping address and phone please.
Me (3/11/2019, 11:35:24 AM): Thank you kindly for your assistance!
[address]
Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:36:15 AM): I have placed and order for your replacement. This should arrive UPS in 10-14 working days. Keep in mind the warranty does not start over with the replacement unit. Is there anything else I can help you with today?
Me (3/11/2019, 11:37:10 AM): That is awesome, Paula! Thank you very much!!! I just had two more questions:
Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:37:43 AM): Ok
Me (3/11/2019, 11:37:46 AM): For old DeWalt batteries that are out of warranty, does DeWalt offer any recycling options?
Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:38:18 AM): No, we do not. You can just take them to Lowes or Home Depot.
Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:38:25 AM): They have a recycling bin.
Me (3/11/2019, 11:38:42 AM): Perfect, thank you for that!
Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:38:53 AM): You are welcome.
Me (3/11/2019, 11:39:04 AM): Lastly, what is the warranty length for DeWalt 20V lithium Ion batteries?
Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:39:06 AM): Depends on the battery model number.
Me (3/11/2019, 11:39:28 AM): For instance the DCB205
Paula D (3/11/2019, 11:39:36 AM): 3 years.
Me (3/11/2019, 11:39:56 AM): Perfect, thank you for your help Paula and have an absolutely wonderful day!!!
Thanks for the tip — I have two bad batteries, no receipt. I gave them the date that I thought they were purchased, and that was good enough for a replacement to be sent.
Dear Richard,
I am VERY glad that DeWalt was able to replace your batteries for you. I have had 3 DeWalt batteries go bad and DeWalt replaced them all under warranty. 🙂 I do wish the batteries would last longer, but I am definitely satisfied with DeWalt’s service!
Enjoy your two new batteries and have a GREAT week!

ok thank you. I have four batteries that don’t work the way they should! they are less than a year old could you help me get them replaced? I have several DeWALT power tools so you can see the fix I’am in thank you.
Dear Edward,
Thank you for your question. YES, I think you should be able to get them replaced under warranty if they are less than a year old. Make sure to reach out to DeWalt and they should be able to get you fixed up.
Have a GREAT week!

I have had great life out of the batteries, it is the battery case that sucks! I think i have several 3 of the 20v max XR and 2 or 3 of the 5 ah batteries that are fine but all have broken cases, I have saved the broken ones for when one with a good case finally dies I can swap the parts.
Thank you for the info, Ed! I have been lucky with my battery casings, though I have had some issues with the copper terminals (i.e. I had to clean them with a brush).
Here’s hoping we both finally get some trouble-free usage out of our DeWalt batteries!!!
Best regards,
-J.D.
I have a 20v dewalt battery that quit charging. It was made 2017 25-49 5-6. Is it still under warranty? Thanks Harlen
Dear Harlen,
It may depend on which battery back you own. Here is a link to DeWalt’s warranty page:
https://www.dewalt.com/legal/warranty/3-year-limited-warranty
(they mention some batteries have 2 years warranty, some 3 years warranty, etc.)
I highly recommend checking that list and reaching out to them to determine if perhaps your battery is still covered under a 3-year warranty!
Best regards,
-J.D.
