Fix Brightness Adjustment Dell Laptop Windows 10 [SOLVED]
Recently I upgraded three different Dell laptops to Windows 10. The first was a Dell Inspiron 11 2-in-1, the 2nd was a Dell Latitude E5450, and the 3rd was a Dell XPS 13 (2015 Infinity Display). While I love Windows 10 so far, there is one major annoyance: brightness adjustment no longer works! i.e. when you press Function Key + Brightness Up/Down, the onscreen brightness meter pops up but the actual brightness adjustment does not work 🙁
Thankfully, after some experimentation I finally resolved the issue 🙂 Here is how to fix the brightness adjustment on Dell laptop’s running Windows 10:
#1 Go to Device Mananger
#2 Open Display Adapters
#3 Right click on each Display adapter and choose “Update Driver”
Let windows do it’s thing (which may take a while since the driver will need to be downloaded).
After that, voila you should have your brightness adjustment back! 🙂
This is current info as of August 6th, 2015. Dell laptops mentioned above. All latest Windows 10 updates installed.

Hi Gordon,
Thank you for your comment. I am sorry to hear that the solution does not work for the 15R 🙁
If I hear any more suggestions/tips that might work, I will definitely post them here 🙂

I’ve actually found a solution, in device manager there should be a generic pnp monitor, just enable that and the brightness control now works!!
Hi Gordon,
Thank you for the tip!
Have a great week and enjoy your Dell with brightness adjustment 🙂
Best regards,

this worked for me too, however, it was already enabled. I disabled and re-enabled and VOILA.

To adjust screen brightness, open the Windows Mobility Center, press WinKey+X to open the WinX Menu and select Mobility Center. Alternativey, open Run box, type mblctr and hit Enter.
Pls after the update my pc screen went blank if put it of and then on it displays but once it gets to the home screen it goes blank again
Sorry for the late reply, Chris. A screen that goes blank right at the home screen sounds more serious than the simple brightness-slider issue from my post. My first guess would be a graphics driver problem, so I would try Safe Mode or an external monitor before assuming it is only brightness.
The solution worked perfectly for my Dell Latitude E5470. Thank you
Hi Dotun,
Thank you for your comment. I am glad this solution worked for your E5470. 🙂
Enjoy your nice laptop and have a great week!

@Gordon’s fix worked on my Dell XPS 9350. After going for several years without a working brightness control, all I had to do was DELETE Monitor PNP, then scan for changes. Delighted to have resolved the long standing issue.
Worked great for me! Dell Inspiron 5566
Thank you!!
Hi Sue,

I updated Dell Vostro recently and suddenly display brightness has gone down. FX brightness up and down shows movement but brightness does not improve. Tried things mentioned above but does not work.
J D, this still works in 2019! I don’t know why all the updates I have recently installed missed this, but your solution worked! Thank you!
Dear Paul,
Thank you for your nice comment. I am very glad that my post helped with the brightness issue! Enjoy your laptop and have a great week. 🙂

hi… i have trouble with display brightness…neither increasing nor decreasing…
i tried all the above methods and no result.
help me with this…DELL inspiron 15 3578
Senguttuvan, if Windows update did not fix it, I would next try the graphics driver directly from Dell or Intel for that exact Inspiron 15 3578. That sounds like a driver mismatch more than a broken brightness key.
Thank yo so much! I had been struggling with not being able to brighten my screen for months and found your solution. It worked great on my Latitude 5590. Thank you so much!
Dear Suzanne,
I am very glad this helped with your brightness adjustment! Have a GREAT week and thank you for commenting. 🙂

Hi JD
Thanks for this valuable service you provide… Just wanted to share with you I have the same issue with my Dell AIO Inpirion 7790 Intel UHD Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce MX110. I have followed all Windows 10 instructions and nothing worked. Was hoping you or any of the readers will have a solution to share.
My workaround is to have the night light setting on making it more opaque or darker, side effect is all colors are distorted.
Thanks for reading
Don’t know what I have, but I don’t even know what a, “device manager” is, so clearly not basic enough for me!
