OnePlus 5 Sample Portrait Photos
The OnePlus 5 is an interesting phone released at an interesting time. Specifically, a phone with two cameras, when two cameras are a new big feature. Personally, I am a fan of the dual camera concept.
The ability to have two focal lengths in a single phone is wonderful. There are a couple approaches:
2x zoom
This is the route Apple went with the iPhone 7 Plus and its ~28mm wide and ~56mm telephoto (35mm equivalent)
Ultrawide
This is the LG G6 approach of ~29mm wide and ~18mm ultra-wide
(35mm equivalent)
Being able to pull of the telephoto focal length generally requires a smaller sensor (or a larger camera bump). The unfortunate side effect of the smaller sensor is more noise and lower overall image quality.
OnePlus went with the telephoto option for the model 5 and I cannot really blame them. Apple is a trendsetter in the mobile arena and following in their footsteps made good sense. Conversely, LG seems to have not made much of a dent in the market with the G6 so OnePlus may have been wise not to go the ultrawide second camera route.
Now, back to the title of this post, portrait photography with the OnePlus 5. Utilizing both cameras for depth detection and software simulated bokeh, the 5 is able to pull off some fairly nice portraits:
