Silent mod for Intel NUC, Haswell and more

Care for a silent fanless NUC? Very doable! UPDATE: Thanks to commenter KW for letting me know about Logic Supply’s offering of Intel’s latest and greatest i5 NUC motherboard. They are also preparing a new fanless case, model ML300, for the NUC. Woot! 🙂 Silent build recommendations? – Ars Technica OpenForumhttp://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1197169&p=24244795&hilit=nuc+case#p24244795I was just taking a gander over at Puget Systems and their super-silent systems. I love the promise of near silence, but the pricepoint seems pretty dang steep considering I’m

GIGABYTE BRIX specs, similar to NUC but even faster

With Intel’s NUC you are stuck choosing between Gigabit Ethernet -or- Thunderbolt, and you get zero USB 3.0 ports 🙁 GIGABYTE arrives on the scene with their BRIX small form factor PC and it appears to improve upon the NUC by offering a faster CPU (up to 2GHz [w/3.1GHz turbo] on the BRIX vs 1.8GHz on the NUC) and (2) USB 3.0 ports. Photos courtesy of GIGABYTE One of the only drawbacks on the BRIX is that lack of Thunderbolt support.

Two takes on Intel’s NUC (pros/cons)

I am a big fan of Intel’s little NUCs. They are very easy to work on and their performance is entirely satisfactory for many purposes: I built one for my dad to use as an always on storage/downloading computer, and I built another as a green mini-web-server for a client. 🙂 Along those lines, here is a rather positive review detailing a NUC as HTPC setup: How we built a tiny home theater PC with Intel’s NUC | PCWorldhttp://www.pcworld.com/article/2020577/how-we-built-a-tiny-home-theater-pc-with-intels-nuc.htmlFull-featured PCs are getting

Garmin Forerunner 230/235 wrong time?! [SOLVED]

Garmin Forerunner 230 5:55:55

My wife’s Garmin Forerunner 230 recently started having some time issues. Specifically, showing the wrong time 🙁 First I tried setting the time manually and that worked until her next Bluetooth sync, then it seemed to get the incorrect time again. Eventually, the following worked to fix her watch time permanently: set the time back to Automatic make sure GPS is enabled* (and GLONASS for good measure) make sure the watch gets a GPS lock to sync the time *Enable GPS:

Intel.com driver site down with 500 error

While setting up an Intel NUC today, I discovered the entire driver portion of Intel’s website is down. The site only lists a “500:Server Error [20-0004]” error message. This is quite a bummer as Windows 7 lacks some of the basic drivers for the NUC’s Ethernet adapter etc. 🙁 This type of outage is why I often keep a mirror of drivers. Hopefully Intel will get their site working again soon!

ASRock AM1H-ITX DC power and discrete video card?

The ASRock AM1H-ITX is a nice little motherboard with the bonus versatility of having a DC power jack for 19V external power supplies -or- the standard 24 pin ATX power connector. Having DC input (barrel connector) as a power option begs the question of just how much power input is supported (i.e. how many watts, or amps at 19V)? As an aside, a NUC power supply is compatible and we know they do not put out much power. Most small
