Culinary Delights
Posted by J.D. in Daily Updates on March 18th, 2010
When Samantha is cooking, she is usually too busy (or too covered in ingredients) to take photos of the process. So when I’m around, I try to snag a few photos of what’s cookin’. Here’s a sampling:
Homemade Strawberry Shortcake
Samantha’s desserts are always to die for, and this one was definitely not an exception!
Stuffed Pepper Beginnings

I’m not big on stuffed peppers, but these turned out to be AMAZING once Samantha finished with them

Outstanding Week

Good work and good play
This has been an outstanding week. One of my favorite weeks in a long time. Much of that is due to Samantha. She has been here working and playing alongside me. We’ve been accomplishing a lot and having a grand ol’ time doing it.
Warning, there are a LOT of photos in the rest of this post!
A milestone for our solar powered home

2009.09.04 updated with URLs for equipment (see bottom of post)
Since we’ve been married, Samantha and I have lived off the grid. We don’t have any utility bills and we haven’t had a single power outage. However, today (September 3rd, 2000) still marks a big day for us in our off the grid living. Because today we connected our new batteries and solar setup to our house. We now have over 30x the electrical storage capacity!
Energy during the day is produced by solar panels. We use some of it and the excess is stored in the batteries. During the night we use the batteries as our sole source of electricity. Previously we had plenty of electricity during the day, but in the evenings we had to monitor our power usage fairly carefully.
Now at night time Samantha can use her 24″ monitor, I can use my 27″ monitor, we can turn lots of lights on, and we can run just about anything else we want. I could do some welding right now if I wanted to! This is really a treat for us. Not having it before, means we really appreciate it now
.
Currently the setup is ugly, but it is working perfectly. This post is being written with power generated from the sun, stored in those batteries, and output with this setup. Here is a photo showing practically all the components required (other than panels, wiring and breakers, which are not shown). It’s really not that complex of a system but it is works wonderfully.

Shows some of the "backend" components of an off the grid setup. (click the photo for a larger, more legible, version)
Thanks for sharing in this milestone for our home
.
PS Three notes:
#1 Why? Someone interested in solar asked me what prompted my family to start using solar, the reasons are:
+independence: we like to produce our own electricity and be relatively independent of external circumstances
+choice of living place: solar is one of the only viable options where we live
+environmental friendliness: solar is clean. There are some up front environmental production costs for the panels, but over the lifespan of the panel it will produce much more electricity than it cost to build the panel.
#2 Cost. I am not saying that solar is cheaper than living on the grid, because it is not cheaper as of 2009. However, while utility prices may go up in the future, the costs of this system will not go up. It is already been paid for and now it simply produces electricity for the rest of its lifespan (and my family has panel and batteries older than me [29 years old] that are still working). Likewise, for new installations, these electrical components (much like computers) generally get cheaper and more efficient over time, rather than more expensive.
#3 To each their own. I am not advocating solar for everyone, it just works really well for us and our purposes. If you think it is something that will work well for you too, that is awesome! If it doesn’t seem like your cup of tea, that’s cool too.
PS here is a transcript of the photo description:
Legend:
#1 Outback MX80 Charge Controller
Accepts electricity from the solar panels and converts it into a form ideally suited for charging the batteries
Cost: $392 (purchased on eBay w/30% Bing/live.com cashback, price before cashback was $560)
Warranty: 5 years
#2 TriMetric 2020 Battery System Monitor
Shows vital electrical statistics: how much electricity you are producing/using, how much electricity is remaining in the batteries, and more.
Cost: $140.67
#3 Xantrex Prosine Inverter – 1800 watts
Converts 24V DC (batteries) into 110V AC (the voltage you need for your house)
Warranty: 5 years
Cost: $660 (eBay, new in box)
#4 HUP Solar One batteries
1690A/H of electricity at 24V
Weight: 2,672lbs total
Warranty: 10 years (but will last 20-30 years w/gentle usage [discharge cycle])
Recyclability: nearly 100% recyclable at end of life
Costs: $6,848
————————————————————-
Total cost $$$: less than the cost of a new economy car (this is even including the panels, which are not included in the photo).
Total benefit: enables us to live where we want (there are no power lines) and have no electrical bills for the next 20-30 years and beyond.
PHOTO NOTE: system will be improved with time, this is the current “ghetto” state of affairs. This diagram doesn’t show the solar panels.
Work is done so it’s party time
Posted by J.D. in Uncategorized on May 12th, 2009
For the past week Samantha and I have been working hard in preparation for taking some time off to party. Now party time has arrived
. We’re in Springfield now, I’m doing some final work from the comfort of our Honda Element and Samantha is getting ready to go hang out with Cheryl and Amy. Tomorrow I’m meeting up with some Drury buddies for lunch and then it is time to celebrate Kevin’s birthday in the evening (we’re going to watch Star Trek amongst other manly things
).
After that it should be some R&R in Spfd and Rockaway until the weekend when hopefully we’ll get to hang out with Samantha’s mom (and maybe Samantha’s grandparents) in the vicinity of Springfield and Bolivar. I’m sure there will be some work interspersed in there and I know we’ll be mowing the yard in Rockaway (if we ever get more dry weather) but overall we have our ducks in a row so it is nice to chill a bit!
Hope everybody is having a good week out there!!
PS It was an absolutely gorgeous day this morning and noon, hopefully a sign of more nice weather this Spring!
Men’s League Basketball 2009
Posted by J.D. in Uncategorized on May 8th, 2009
Yesterday was the last night of men’s league basketball this season. The league started in March and we had games almost every Tues/Thurs until now. Overall is was a lot of fun and good exercise. We ended up doing fairly well, losing in the semi-finals to a quality team. I’m not sure yet if that team went on to win it all, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did.
It was nice to get reacquainted with some more of the guys from around Winona. We had a good bunch of guys and I think we all had a lot of fun and tried not to be too serious about it, which isn’t to say that we weren’t disappointed when we would lose!
I missed a couple games due to injury and a wedding. But other than that I went to them all and Samantha came with me too except for when she was teaching at Drury. Samantha also took a lot of good photos of the games. I’ve been posting the photos to facebook but now I’m going to upload a few to flickr so I can more easily post them to my blog
.
Now that the season is over Samantha and I will be able to do some nice nice traveling and adventuring, without having to consider whether we’ll miss a game or not
. Also, I’m looking forward to open gyms starting back up in Winona. I really enjoy open gyms starting again. I really enjoy open gym because you can get in a lot of games during one evening and you get to mix it up against different teams.
I think now may be the time for Samantha and me to start a new workout regimen to stay in shape
. We’ve been talking it over and we’ll have to see what materializes…
PS Here are a few photos from various games:
The end…
Amazing new bedroom!
Posted by J.D. in Uncategorized on May 6th, 2009
Today Samantha surreptitiously rearranged the bedroom all while I was working in my office. I had no idea any of this was going on, though I should have realized something was up due to the unusual silence around the house. In the end it was a total surprise to me!
She did an amazing job. Now it feels like we have an entirely new awesome bedroom, whereas before it just seemed like we had a room with a bed in it
.
So perhaps it’s not an entirely new bedroom, but it sure feels like it is! Many, many thanks to Samantha!!!
Samantha’s Birthdays
Posted by J.D. in Uncategorized on April 10th, 2009
This post will be updated periodically until Samantha’s birthday on the 14th of April…
Here is a photo from her birthday last year:
For her birthday she always seems to end up with ribbon in her hair!
We’ll be going to Springfield/Bolivar for the day of Samantha’s birthday. So today we’re doing a little early celebrating here at the farm. Samantha is getting one of her favorite meals for lunch (chimichangas) and we’re opening a few presents tonight.
Presents so far
- Blog upgrade (2009/April/10th)
- I upgraded her blog from an older WPMU installation to a brand-spankin’-new full Wordpress installation: http://samantha.weblogs.us/ The new installation should be much faster and reliable, with lots of new features to boot! The theme (graphic design) is temporary until she has time to pick out one she really likes.
- Trip to Tulsa (2009/April/15th-19th)
- We’re going down to Tulsa to visit friends, do some post-birthday partying, and eat sushi at Asahi. There are all sorts of fun activities scheduled [thanks Jesse!] but that’s for another post.
To be continued…
