Musings on turning 30

I think this is going to be another good year :-) .

Photo: sunset in the Ozarks, taken late last month.

Intro: I’ve heard that you if you watch someone you can see the story of their life. I’m not talking about what kind of car they drive or how expensive their watch is, I’m talking about whether they are kind to others and whether they believe in themselves. I mean are they as healthy as they can be and do they live life to the fullest, as in have they lived each year of their life as a new experience and learned from their mistakes, or have they just repeated the same years and mistakes over and over. I desire to live a worthwhile life and to tell a fulfilling story with my life, I have a lot of work to do to get there but I’m working on it :-) ..

Turning 30: Surprisingly Exciting

Though I must say never really imagined being thirty years old, the number just seems too big. I realize anyone that’s turned 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 or 100 has already passed this milestone and to them 30 probably seems/feels like 21 did to me.

But still, the biggest thing for me about turning 30 is the continued realization that we each can do what we want with our lives. The main limitations are self imposed by choices voluntary made, they are not imposed by others. Likewise, the areas where we excel are generally self-achieved and not handed to us on a silver platter (achievement, by definition, is not a gift).

The older we get… the more we have molded our lives (for good or bad)

It seems the older we get the more responsibility (or opportunity) we have in how our lives become and what we’ve done while we’re on earth. This is somewhat different than when we’re young. When we’re a child our parents and teachers have a large impact on who we are and what we do. High school brings more freedom, post-high school and college bring even more, and then when we’re in “the real world” there’s almost complete autonomy.

So, if I find that I’ve developed a gut/belly then I’m the only one to blame. Likewise, if I’ve got six-pack abs then I’m the one primarily responsible. But this is not limited to physical things.  It can be intellectual: have I educated myself? It can be spiritual: do I feel at one with God/The Creator/The Cosmos/Myself? (take your pick) It can be experience-based: have I done the things I’ve dreamed of, am I actively working towards them? It can be relationships: am I good to the ones I love?

This independence is complimentary to the mutual benefits of family and close friends. They can provide inspiration that would be tough to find alone and I never want to discount their importance.

For me  having a wonderful wife has made life even more rewarding and enjoyable. Samantha is a great help to me in improving myself and learning more about life. Without someone to balance out life, it’s very easy to assume “my way is the right way”. When you have someone you’re sharing life with, whether it’s a spouse or close friends or whomever, it helps you keep a healthy balance of self-discovery and learning from others (rather than getting in a rut). Likewise having a supportive family and friends makes every day easier and more fulfilling.

Achievement

Back to opportunity, I am finding that the only thing that separates me from my goals is simply inaction or action in the form of bad habits. For most goals the deciding factor doesn’t seem to  be money, power, or ability, instead  it’s simply having the will to accomplish what we want (and to avoid things that are detrimental to our goals).

The goals that I am happiest about don’t have much to do with external factors, they are almost wholly a result of desire embodied in simple and consistent work. If something is important enough to us, we can most likely achieve it.

So if our story is a beautiful one, we have ourselves and our loved ones to thank for it.

Being a father

Samantha is due to have our baby on September 1st, 2010. Being a good father is at the top of my goals and it influences many of my other goals as well. It is an amazing motivator that helps me continue striving for: improved physical fitness (I want to be able to play sports or do activities with my child for many years to come), monetary security for my family (for their health and education), good relationships with family (so my  child will know and love their family as much as they can), and many more related  goals

Thank you!

Thank you to all the people in my life who have helped me get to this point, I look forward to many more years together and many more goals dreamed and achieved together :-) .

Cool moms!

I wanted to write a quick tribute to my awesome mom and my wonderful mother-in-law. They are very special women and they never cease to impress me!

They are also very, very cool. Case in point, on Mother’s Day: my mom did an amazing amount of work helping me put a new roof on my house, my mother-in-law went to the shooting range…

What’s so cool about that to me is that my mom is amazingly fit and absolutely loves to be busy and productive outdoors. Likewise, going to the range or being out taking photos is my mother-in-law’s idea of a great day.

I feel immensely happy to have such fantastic women in my life (not to mention my amazing wife!) Thank you both for everything!

Kayak week and staying busy

It’s tough to come up with good titles anymore after having a website/blog for 10+ years. Actually, I’m not sure I was ever very good at picking blog titles ;-) . I almost entitled this blog entry “Mashed Potatoes and White Gravy”  due to me having mashed potatoes and white gravy three days in a row. However, I decided to title it “Kayak week and staying busy” and leave the permalink (URL) with the mashed potatoes bit…

One of the times eating mashed potatoes and gravy :-)

That three-day string was prompted by us eating at Benita’s: twice after kayaking the Eleven Point River (and also Springcreek for one of those trips), and once when Samantha and I went to town to pickup our metal roofing. On the Springcreek trip, we also did some hiking up a small tributary of the Eleven Point River:

I also kayaked the Current River with my dad and friends. Here are some photos I took while on (and hiking near) the river:

This river cave, complete with a massive spring inside of it, was AWESOME:

(continue on for more photos from inside the cave, a recap of what’s been going on, AND butterflies ;-) )

Brief update

Our good friends from Arizona are visiting.

Went kayaking on the Eleven Point river with friends on Wednesday. Gorgeous trip!

Roofing is ordered and should be in this week or next.

Mowed last week and weed whacked today.

Building a new unRAID based media server :-) .

Cleaned my “shop” area with Samantha’s excellent help.

Weeded our small garden area.

Did maintenance on our off-grid battery system today.

I redid some of the wiring in our house in preparation for a new breaker box.

Celebrated lots of good birthdays this month!

Samantha made her delicious, and famous, lemon squares.

Redoing our hall closet into a more usable area, as well as converting part of it into a mini-office.

Played “ladders” with our friends tonight after tasty grilled hamburgers/veggie burgers.

We’ve had some good NetRender sales recently.

Lots of other fun trips and adventures, already occurred and coming up soon :-) .

Roofing drawings and modeling using Google Sketchup

Today I started the order for some new roofing for our house. Here are some of the drawings I made in Google Sketchup. These were what I used for calculating how much roofing to order:

Top view:

Overall, Sketchup made it nice and easy to get produce “good enough” drawings for my purposes :-) .

Culinary Delights

When Samantha is cooking, she is usually too busy (or too covered in ingredients) to take photos of the process. So when I’m around, I try to snag a few photos of what’s cookin’. Here’s a sampling:

Homemade Strawberry Shortcake

Samantha’s desserts are always to die for, and this one was definitely not an exception!

Stuffed Pepper Beginnings

I’m not big on stuffed peppers, but these turned out to be AMAZING once Samantha finished with them :-) .

Weekend Wrapup

The weekend is almost over, where did it go?

This weekend was pretty laid back compared to the past few weekends. Two weekends ago we were in Tulsa for a whirlwind business/pleasure trip. Last weekend I spent the entirety of it doing surprise projects for Samantha (self-installing DirecTV and replacing two windows).

So this Friday we went to West Plains for some grub and supplies but I ended up striking out on most of the things I was looking for. It was a fun outing nonetheless, we got to explore some of the areas around HWY 160 and go to some places we don’t usually go.

Computer Upgrades and the Rest of the Weekend

Saturday I installed a 30GB SSD in my netbook and upgraded the OS. Sunday we installed an 80GB Intel SSD in Samantha’s laptop and upgraded the OS. I did a fair amount of work in the mornings, but most of the afternoons/evenings were relatively free for other fun tasks. Samantha also started working on setting up a project on her loom, I’m excited to get to see her in action! (weaving)

Rambling paragraphs coming up (that needs to be proofread and revised ;-) )

I started reading a new book that my dad recommended. So far it is an excellent read, but it really makes me question the sanity of the big financial institutions (companies). These companies created some the new financial instruments that were catalysts for the recession. The way they used these instruments was amazingly reckless. It ended up tainting and entangling economies all over the world.

I’m only about 1/3 of the way through the book, but so far I am astounded that these companies (and banks worldwide) were able to cause all the damage that they did and not even receive a slap on the wrist (but rather a fistful of money in the form of bailouts and payouts).

It really seems a recurring rend that some of the most damaging deeds in human history were done by a select few that weren’t really supervised (or even understood) by their overseers and there existence isn’t even on the radar of the main population. The actions were either too complex, too hidden, or too convoluted for them to be prevented. Capitalism is an excellent system, but it requires transparency and valid information. If those last two aspects are missing, it can really be abused IMHO.
End Rambling.

The house is in really nice shape (clean and organized) so the next big household projects will be: putting on a new roof (getting the materials from a local place in Willow Springs) and converting my office into a baby room :-) .

Well, just before writing this I grated some sweet potatoes and now Samantha is making sweet potato hash browns. We’re taking it with us over to my parents house as a side dish, I think my mom is making homemade pot pies. We better head out!

PS one of our friends re-started blogging, I’m excited to see what she posts!

Busy and Thankful

Things have been busy around here! Projects left and right, with a trip (thanks Jesse ;-) ) coming up to top things off. But it’s a good busy and good projects too. These are worthwhile things that pay dividends in the long run. Despite the busyness, we are making sure to take time out for the little things that mean a lot to us.  This is a very special time for us as we consider the future and treasure the present.

On a personal note: Pregnancy from the husband’s perspective

I’m enjoying being the husband of a pregnant woman. It’s a totally new experience to me and I’m excited, dumbfounded and happy (often all at the same time).

My wife is wonderful and she’s handling pregnancy very well. But I am very thankful for her support group of friends: women that are going through it, have been through it, or are contemplating it at some point in the future. It’s not that Samantha needs or wants help per se, rather she has compatriots that she can just talk to about anything and everything . I do my best, but I’m no substitute for her talking with her gal pals.

Along those lines,  we’ve gotten to see a lot of our local friends lately and that has been really nice. Likewise, our family is awesome and it’s great having them be so supportive (even if some of our family we don’t get to see nearly as often as we’d like!)

I really couldn’t ask for anything more :-) .

PS Congratulations to the Winona Wildcats Varsity, they played a great game tonight and won against the Couch Indians in overtime. The players from both towns did an excellent job and they all played hard.
