Google Fiber: excellent in theory, disappointing in practice?

My friend Ronnie lives in Overland Park and as such I have been keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that he will get Google Fiber ASAP. Unfortunately, that has not been happening. Google has still not announced availability for Overland Park and beyond that they are not rolling out very fast to the areas they have announced. ๐Ÿ™ Ronnie can tell you better than I can, so here is what he had to say:

Hey JD.. Google Fiber.. They keep announcing expansion plans, but so far they have not kept up with the pace of installing the actual fiber. Only a very few select areas even have it despite all of the promotion Google is putting out. Alot of the projects I design I am installing conduit for Google Fiber to eventually pull through, but so far they have not installed the actual Fiber. I’d be surprised to see it hit Overland Park soon mainly because that is where the KC offices of Time Warner are located and Overland Park has agreements in place. That could change though.

Summary and Conclusion

I was very excited when Google initially announced that they choose Kansas City Missouri for their Google Fiber launch. Now, some time later, I am hearing from more and more friends in the area that the reality is not quite as good as they had hoped. Specifically, when Google announces availability for a particular area it is then takingย a long time for people to get their installs. It is not a situation where you call them and get an install later that week. ๐Ÿ™

So, kudos to Google for offering some wicked fast internet but here’s hoping they will dedicate more resources to getting it installed to the areas they advertise as having availability! ๐Ÿ™‚
